On June 1, 1796 Tennessee became the 16th State accepted into the United States of America. During the first 14 years of statehood, Tennessee saw a growth in population of more than 165,000 new residents. Tennessee began as a farming territory and continued to be an agricultural community until the mid-1900s. Today Tennessee is major destination for tourism within the U.S.A., an industrial mecca, a professional sports wonderland, and the country musical capital of the world.
Tennessee is probably most famous for it's contribution to the musical industry. Many thousands of country singers have made their dreams come true by singing at the Grand Ol Opry at Nashville, which is renowned worldwide as the home and world's capital of country music. Many thousand more have prayed for the day they could step foot on that stage. Tennessee was also home to an amazing and powerful musical giant, Elvis Presley the "King of Rock n' Roll."
Graceland can be found in Memphis. This is the mansion where Elvis Presley lived. It is still the centre of a yearly migration for many Presley fans. The anniversary of the King's death is a particularly busy time of year for Graceland. This is when many long-time followers come to pay respects to their fallen idol.
Dolly Parton, borne in Sevierville, established her internationally famed theme park, Dollywood, at Pigeon Forge in a scenic valley just north of the Smoky Mountain National Park, and which has grown into a major entertainment destination which now welcomes more than 11 million visitors each year from all corners of the world.
In the tiny hamlet of Lynchburg, with a population of 361 persons and just 75 miles south-east of Nashville, is the oldest distillery in the country and part of the heritage of the U.S.A. It is here where Jack Daniels decided to settle in 1866 and where every drop of the famous Jack Daniels Tennessee Whiskey is made.
Chattanooga, on the beautiful Tennessee River, is famous for historic Lookout Mountain, the 145 foot high underground Ruby Falls, the world's largest freshwater aquarium, and the opportunity to sample true southern hospitality in the old riverboat tradition on the Southern Belle Riverboat.
The State of Tennessee is home to three professional sports team. The Tennessee Titans is part of the National Football League. The Titans stadium is found in the great city of Nashville. The Memphis Grizzlies are a National Basketball League. The Nashville Predators are members of the National Hockey League. Each of these sports teams bring thousands of spectators and fans to Tennessee every year.
Tennessee also has an intriguing civil rights history. From as early as 1819, parts of Tennessee stood against slavery. The Civil War divided the state along abolitionist lines; and the 1950s and 60s saw many desegregation acts such as non-violent protests by Black Americans and the Supreme Court decision of the Brown v. Board of Education which allowed black children to attend white only schools.
Memphis Tennessee is also the site of the infamous Martin Luther King Jr. assassination.
With so much history, arts and sports to be found in the State of Tennessee, it is no wonder that it is such a popular vacation destination for many American as well as international tourists every year. |
